How It Works & Safety

What Madison Backyard is, how it works, and how we try to keep it safe for teens, families, and seniors.

How it works

  1. 1. Sign up as a Teen or an Adult.
  2. 2. Adults post odd jobs with the pay and estimated hours.
  3. 3. Teens browse Open Jobs and contact adults about ones they like.
  4. 4. Teen and adult chat in-app to work out the details.
  5. 5. Adult marks the job Done once it's finished.

Parent & guardian permission

Before a teen can take on jobs, they have to check a box confirming their parent or guardian gave them permission — including for any job that uses equipment like a lawnmower. Teens must also be at least 12 years old to sign up, and every teen's sign-up collects a parent/guardian name and contact so an adult is always in the loop.

Safety tips

Reporting a problem

Every profile and every message thread has a "Report a problem" option. If something doesn't feel right, use it — reports go straight to the site owner for review.

Building trust over time

After a job is marked Done, the adult can leave the teen a short star rating and comment. Ratings build up on a teen's public profile so neighbors can see a track record of jobs done well.
